Lecture 2: The main steps in Algorithm design

We spend the first 10 minutes of the lecture going over more logistics including why (i) I’ll be very strict with deadlines and (ii) more details on the HW and collaboration.

We then had a group discussion and figured out some of the major tasks that one needs to accomplish to go from a high level problem description to (say) an iPad app. We then saw the 4 step process that we will consider in this course. Finally we looked at the problem that the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) solves every year.

Next class we will formalize the problem that NRMP solves (technically it’ll be called the Stable Marriage Problem). This material will be from Sec 1.1 in the textbook.

The lecture slides have been uploaded.
